The two big SEO suites shipped AI visibility products within months of each other, and on paper they do the same job: tell you how often assistants name your brand, and which sources they cite instead. Then you look at the invoice. Ahrefs Brand Radar with full engine coverage is $699/mo on top of an Ahrefs plan. The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is $99/mo on top of a Semrush plan. Seven times the price for the same job title is not a rounding error — it means one of them is not doing the job you think it is.

This page puts the two side by side on price, engines, data model and cadence, and is honest about which one is the wrong purchase in which situation. Disclosure: we make Sightivo, a competing product, and the section comparing us is labelled as such. Every figure below was checked in August 2026 against ahrefs.com/pricing, the Brand Radar page and Semrush's pricing page for our Ahrefs Brand Radar review and Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit review. We have not run either on a paid plan.

TL;DR: These are not competing tools so much as opposite methods. Semrush tracks the prompt list you write, daily, on a small allowance — 25 prompts on the $99 add-on. Ahrefs samples a 472M-prompt pool it maintains itself, monthly for most platforms, and charges $199 per engine. If you already pay for one suite, buy that one and stop reading. If you pay for neither, the honest answer is that both are expensive ways to reach a specialist's starting price.

The Short Answer

  • Already on Semrush? Add the toolkit. $99/mo per domain for 25 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode is the cheapest AI visibility line item either suite sells.
  • Already on Ahrefs, and you only care about one engine? $199/mo for that one platform, inside Ahrefs. Do not buy all six on reflex.
  • Already on Ahrefs, and discovery is the point? The $699 all-platforms tier is the only product here that shows you prompts you never thought to write. That is what you are paying for.
  • On neither suite? Neither. You would be buying a keyword tool to unlock an AI tracker, at $228/mo minimum on Ahrefs Lite for one engine, or $199/mo via Semrush One for 50 prompts.

The Real Difference Is the Data Model, Not the Price

Almost every comparison of these two gets stuck on the $699 versus $99 and concludes that Ahrefs is overpriced. That is the wrong frame, because the two products answer different questions.

Semrush is prompt-first. You write the questions your buyers ask, Semrush puts them to the engines every day, and you watch a number move. The allowance is small and the loop is tight. It answers: do the 25 questions that matter to my pipeline name us this week?

Ahrefs is pool-first. It maintains a database of prompts and queries derived from search data — 472M+ monthly prompts, of which 311.4M are AI Overviews, 36.8M ChatGPT, 31.3M Gemini and 31.2M Copilot — samples AI answers across it, and lets you filter to your brand, competitors and topics. It answers: across a very large universe of questions in my category, where do we appear and where do competitors appear without us?

The second question is genuinely valuable and nobody at $99 can answer it. It is also not the question most teams have. If you already know your twenty buyer prompts, you are paying $699/mo for a discovery feature you will use once a quarter.

The catch runs the other way too. Ahrefs' 2,500 custom checks a month sound generous until you do the arithmetic: a check is one prompt on one platform, so fifty prompts across six platforms is 300 checks per sampling round — about eight rounds a month. And because most platforms in the pool refresh monthly, week-to-week comparisons on Brand Radar are mostly noise. Semrush's 25 prompts are a fifth of the volume, but they run daily, which is the cadence you need during a launch or after a content push.

Engines: Ahrefs Wins on Count, Neither Wins on Claude

Brand Radar covers six surfaces — Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot — plus YouTube, TikTok and Reddit visibility in beta. That beta coverage is unusual and worth something if your buyers research on video or in communities; given Ahrefs' own finding that YouTube mentions correlate most strongly with ChatGPT visibility, it is not a gimmick.

Semrush covers ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, with Perplexity listed on some product pages. That is four surfaces for $99 against six for $699, and it is the better coverage-per-dollar by a wide margin — but it stops at Google and ChatGPT.

Neither tracks Claude on a self-serve plan. Ahrefs does not track it at all, at any tier; Semrush reserves Claude, Copilot and DeepSeek for the custom-priced Enterprise AIO product. Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek are absent from both. If any of those matter in your category, this comparison is not the one you should be running.

What Each One Is Bad At

Brand Radar's honest weaknesses: the price, first and loudest — $199 per platform with no trial, on top of a plan you must already hold. The keyword-derived pool means you are measuring your share of its prompts, not yours, unless you spend custom checks. Monthly refresh for most platforms rules it out as a launch instrument. And there is no Claude.

The toolkit's honest weaknesses: 25 prompts is thin — a category with five buyer intents and three phrasings each is already 15. Every extra domain and every extra sub-user is another $99, which prices agencies out on arithmetic alone; two domains and two users is $396/mo before the Semrush plan underneath. Competitor comparisons are limited to the brands Semrush auto-suggests unless you override them, Brand Performance covers one domain, and exports are capped at 10 CSVs a day. There is no trial on the add-on itself.

What Neither One Does

Both stop at the report. Ahrefs hands you a cited-sources list; Semrush hands you on-page recommendations telling you which of your own pages to rewrite. Neither identifies the third-party roundup that got cited instead of you, finds the person who wrote it, or helps you get onto it.

That matters because of Ahrefs' own research. In its study of 75,000 brands, "best of" list posts made up 43.83% of ChatGPT citations against 14.34% for ordinary blog posts, Reddit was the most-cited domain (847,338 citations, ahead of Wikipedia's 431,710), and cited pages were on average 393 days newer than the pages ranking in Google for the same queries. Semrush's AI search traffic study found roughly 90% of ChatGPT citations come from pages ranking 21st or lower in Google, and that AI search visitors convert at 4.4× the rate of organic visitors.

Read together: the citations you are missing mostly sit on pages you do not own and cannot edit. Both of these tools are very good at showing you that. Neither does anything about it.

The honest summary: both suites beat us comprehensively on keyword and backlink data, on engine count, and on white-label client reporting, and we do not pretend otherwise. Our prompt volumes are sized for one brand rather than a portfolio. What we do that neither does is the half after the measurement — the page you are missing, the third-party sources cited for that prompt, the people behind them, and the email.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit if:

  • You already pay for Semrush. This is the whole argument and it is a good one.
  • You want daily movement on a prompt list you wrote, not a monthly snapshot of someone else's.
  • You track one domain, with one or two people looking at it.
  • You need Prompt Research to build the starting prompt set for you.

Choose Ahrefs Brand Radar if:

  • You already pay for Ahrefs and want AI mentions beside Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer.
  • Discovery is the point: you want to find the prompts where competitors appear and you never knew to look.
  • Your buyers research on YouTube or Reddit, where the beta coverage has no equivalent at Semrush.
  • Budget is not the binding constraint, and a monthly cadence is fine for how you report.

Choose neither if:

  • You pay for neither suite. Specialists start at $29/mo and give you more prompts than either add-on.
  • Claude matters in your category.
  • You are an agency: Semrush charges per domain and per user, and Brand Radar rides on a plan whose seats you also pay for.
  • Your real problem is that the roundup ChatGPT quotes lists nine competitors and not you. Both tools will confirm this in high resolution and neither will fix it.

Common Questions

Is Ahrefs Brand Radar worth seven times the price of the Semrush toolkit?

Only if you need the prompt pool. Brand Radar's $699/mo all-platforms tier buys engine breadth and a 472M+ monthly prompt database you can explore for gaps you did not know to look for. The Semrush toolkit's $99/mo buys daily tracking of 25 prompts you chose across four Google and OpenAI surfaces. If you already know which prompts matter, the $99 product answers your question better and faster. If discovery is the job, nothing at $99 does it.

Which one tracks more AI engines?

Ahrefs. Brand Radar covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, with YouTube, TikTok and Reddit in beta. The Semrush toolkit covers ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, with Perplexity on some product pages. Neither covers Claude on a self-serve plan — Ahrefs not at all, Semrush only in the custom-priced Enterprise AIO.

Do I need an Ahrefs or Semrush subscription to use either?

Yes, both are add-ons. Brand Radar sits on an Ahrefs plan starting at $129/mo (Lite), so one engine is about $328/mo all-in and full coverage about $828/mo. The Semrush toolkit is $99/mo per domain on top of a Semrush plan; without one, the way in is Semrush One Starter at $199/mo with 50 prompts bundled. Neither is available standalone.

How often does each one update?

The Semrush toolkit updates tracked prompts daily. Brand Radar refreshes most platforms monthly, according to independent testers — fine for a quarterly report, too slow to tell you whether last week's launch changed anything. If cadence is what you are buying, that difference matters more than the engine count.

Which is better for an agency?

Neither, on self-serve. Semrush charges $99 per domain and $99 per additional sub-user, so five clients and three staff is over $700/mo before the Semrush plan underneath. Brand Radar's per-platform pricing rides on an Ahrefs plan whose seats you also pay for, and there is no multi-client workspace concept. Both offer white-label reporting, which is the one agency feature they do have; the best AI visibility tools for agencies comparison covers the tools built for this.

Is there a free way to compare them first?

Partly. Both Ahrefs and Semrush publish free one-off AI visibility checkers, and our free AI visibility checker runs five ChatGPT prompts with no signup on the first run. A free snapshot will not trend over time, but it will tell you whether you have a problem worth paying either suite to measure.

What are the alternatives to both?

Profound — $99/mo for ChatGPT only up to $399/mo for three engines, the category's depth reference; see Profound vs the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit. Peec AI — from $80/mo for 50 prompts and three engines of your choice, compared in Profound vs Peec. Otterly.AI — $29/mo for 15 prompts, the cheapest credible tracker. Sightivo — $89/mo, three engines including Claude, unlimited seats, plus the outreach workflow. The full field is compared on price, coverage and action layer in best AI visibility tools.

Key Takeaways

  • The $699 and the $99 buy different methods, not different amounts of the same thing: Ahrefs samples a 472M-prompt pool monthly, Semrush tracks 25 prompts you wrote, daily.
  • Whichever suite you already pay for is almost always the right answer. Neither is worth adopting a suite for.
  • Ahrefs wins on engine count and discovery — six surfaces plus YouTube, TikTok and Reddit in beta. Semrush wins on cadence and on coverage-per-dollar for Google and ChatGPT.
  • Neither tracks Claude on a self-serve plan, and both charge per domain or per platform in ways that punish agencies.
  • Both stop at the report. The citations you are missing are mostly on third-party list pages, and no on-page recommendation reaches them.
