AI Search Statistics 2026: 75 Verified Numbers

75 source-linked AI search statistics: ChatGPT and AI Overviews usage, zero-click rates, what gets cited, mentions vs backlinks, AI referral conversion.

Jess O'Malley, author at Sightivo

Every AI search statistic below was checked at its source in August 2026 and is linked to it. No estimates, no "industry says", and none of Sightivo's own customer data. The list is grouped by the question it answers — how many people use AI search, what it does to clicks, what gets cited, whether backlinks still matter, whether AI traffic converts, who is blocking the crawlers, and what the tools cost.

Cite freely; the format is "Source, month year" so you can copy the attribution with the number. Numbers we hear repeated but could not verify are listed at the end so you do not repeat them either.

Key numbers

Usage and market share

AI search is now a mainstream surface rather than an early-adopter one: nearly a billion people use ChatGPT weekly, and Google has put AI answers in front of 2.5 billion people a month — while Google's share of classic search has barely moved.

  1. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, up from 800 million in October 2025 — OpenAI via TechCrunch, Feb 2026.
  2. ChatGPT's weekly users grew from roughly 400 million in February 2025 to 800 million by October 2025 — OpenAI DevDay via Slashdot, Oct 2025.
  3. Google AI Overviews have over 2.5 billion monthly users, and AI Mode has over 1 billion, with AI Mode queries more than doubling every quarter since launch — Google I/O 2026 keynote, May 2026.
  4. A year earlier, AI Overviews had 1.5 billion monthly users in 200 countries and lifted Google usage by more than 10% on queries where they appeared — Google I/O 2025, May 2025.
  5. AI Overviews passed 2 billion monthly users across 200+ countries and 40 languages by July 2025 — Sundar Pichai, Alphabet earnings call via Digiday, Jul 2025.
  6. Perplexity handled 780 million queries in May 2025, growing more than 20% month over month; the company has not published a comparable 2026 total — Perplexity CEO via Just Think, 2025.
  7. Google still holds 91.3% of worldwide search engine market share; Bing 4.5%, Yahoo 1.2% — StatCounter, Jul 2026.
  8. Roughly one in five Google searches (18%) produced an AI summary in March 2025; question-form searches produced one 60% of the time — Pew Research Center, Jul 2025.
  9. AI Overviews triggered on 13.14% of queries in March 2025, up from 6.49% in January 2025, across 10M+ keywords — Semrush, Nov 2025.
  10. AI Overviews appeared on 33% of the queries in a 1M+ citation dataset in early 2026 — Otterly, Feb 2026.
  11. Google sends 345× more traffic to websites than ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity combined — Ahrefs, Nov 2025.
  12. Roughly 35% of ChatGPT queries trigger a live web search — Superlines, Apr 2026.

AI Overviews and clicks

The consistent finding across independent datasets: when an AI answer is present, fewer people click, and the top organic result loses the most. Zero-click has gone from a plurality to a majority of Google searches.

  1. AI Overviews correlate with a 58% reduction in click-through rate for the #1 result (Dec 2025 data, 300,000 keywords), up from 34.5% in April 2025; position 2 lost 50.8%, position 10 lost 19.4% — Ahrefs, Feb 2026.
  2. Users clicked a result on 8% of searches with an AI summary vs 15% without; only 1% clicked a link inside the summary — Pew Research Center, Jul 2025.
  3. 26% of visits to a page with an AI summary ended the browsing session, vs 16% without one — Pew Research Center, Jul 2025.
  4. 88% of AI summaries cite three or more sources; the median summary is 67 wordsPew Research Center, Jul 2025.
  5. 68% of Google searches end without a click in 2026, up from about 45% in 2016; 80% on desktop B2B queries — Similarweb, Jun 2026.
  6. Zero-click searches rose from 56% to 69% in the year after AI Overviews launched (May 2024 → May 2025); publisher organic traffic fell from 2.3B to under 1.7B monthly visits — Similarweb via Search Engine Roundtable, Jul 2025.
  7. 80% of consumers rely on AI-written results for at least 40% of their searches; 60% of searches end without a click; organic traffic is down 15–25% — Bain & Company, Feb 2025.
  8. AI Overviews are 1.9× more common on non-branded than branded keywords, and 26% of brands have zero AI Overview mentions — Ahrefs, Nov 2025.
  9. 82% of desktop AI Overviews occur on keywords with under 1,000 monthly searches, and 80% target informational intent; the average AIO links to 11 URLsSemrush, Jul 2025.
  10. The #1 organic result appeared in only 46% of desktop and 34% of mobile AI Overviews — Semrush, Jul 2025.
  11. Across 405,576 AI Overviews the average answer is 157 words and cites 5 sources; 78% contain a list — Surfer, Aug 2026.
  12. Only 5% of SERPs with an AI Overview also showed PPC ads in the 2024 sample — Semrush, Jul 2025.

Does ranking in Google get you cited?

Partly. AI Overviews lean on top-ten pages far more than ChatGPT does — and every study measures the overlap differently, which is why the numbers below range from 38% to 92%.

  1. AI Overviews link to at least one top-10 organic domain 92.36% of the time, and pull from top-10 pages 63.19% of the time — SE Ranking, 2025.
  2. 84.72% of AI Overviews linked to at least one top-10 domain in an earlier 100,013-keyword study, and only 8.71% of keywords triggered an AIO in mid-2024 — SE Ranking, Jun 2024.
  3. Only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the top 10; 31% rank beyond position 100 (863,000 SERPs, 4M cited URLs) — Ahrefs, Mar 2026.
  4. 52% of AI Overview sources rank in the organic top 10, averaging position 5 — Surfer, Aug 2026.
  5. 67.82% of sources cited in AI Overviews do not rank in Google's top 10 — Surfer, Feb 2026.
  6. ChatGPT cites pages ranking at position 21+ almost 90% of the time — Semrush, Jul 2025.
  7. 28% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages have zero organic visibility in Google — Ahrefs, Nov 2025.
  8. Pages cited only for fan-out sub-queries are 49% more likely to be cited; pages covering the main query and its sub-queries are 161% more likely — Surfer, Feb 2026.

What gets cited

Community sites, Wikipedia and listicles dominate. Cited pages are not long, they are structured: a direct answer up top, lists, and fresh dates.

  1. Reddit is ChatGPT's most-cited domain at 847,338 citations, ahead of Wikipedia (431,710) and Amazon (97,457) — Ahrefs, Mar 2026.
  2. Reddit is the #1 cited domain on every platform studied (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews), and 52.5% of citations go to community platforms vs 47.5% to brand domains — Otterly, Feb 2026.
  3. Wikipedia (13.15%) and Reddit (11.97%) together account for more than a quarter of U.S. ChatGPT citations; the WSJ, NYT, Bloomberg and FT are not in the top 20 — 5W via PR Newswire, May 2026.
  4. "Best of" list posts make up 43.83% of ChatGPT citations for product-style queries; ordinary blog posts 14.34% — Ahrefs, Mar 2026.
  5. Half of the most-cited URLs across six LLMs are listicles, and 63% of citations point to listicle content (25,000 URLs, ~400M citations) — Evertune via Search Engine Land, May 2026.
  6. Heavily cited pages run 1,000–2,000 words, averaging 18 words per sentence; ranked lists make up 71–86% of cited listicles — Evertune via Search Engine Land, May 2026.
  7. 72.4% of posts ChatGPT cited opened with an "answer capsule", and ~91% of those capsules contained no links — the single most consistent predictor of citation across 15 domains and ~2M sessions — Search Engine Land, Nov 2025.
  8. 44.2% of ChatGPT citations come from the first 30% of a page; 31.1% from the middle and 24.7% from the last third (1.2M answers, 18,012 verified citations) — Kevin Indig via Search Engine Land, Feb 2026.
  9. AI platforms cite content that is 25.7% fresher than organic results; ChatGPT's in-text references are 393 days newer and its citations 458 days newer than Google's — Ahrefs, Mar 2026.
  10. ChatGPT averaged 7.92 citations per answer, Perplexity 21.87, Google AI Overviews 17.93 (118,101 answers, 669,065 citations) — Qwairy, Oct 2025.

  15. 86% of AI citations came from sources brands control — websites 44%, listings 42%, reviews and social 8% (6.8M citations, ChatGPT/Gemini/Perplexity) — Yext, Oct 2025.
  16. Adding statistics, quotations and citations to a page lifted generative-engine visibility by up to 40%Aggarwal et al., GEO (KDD 2024), arXiv 2311.09735.

Mentions vs backlinks

The strongest predictors of showing up in AI answers are off-site brand signals, not links. Backlinks correlate weakly; being mentioned, in places AI already reads, correlates strongly.

  1. Branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, brand anchors at 0.527, brand search volume at 0.392 — versus 0.218 for backlinks and 0.180 for URL rating (75,000 brands) — Ahrefs, May 2025.
  2. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions — about 10× the next quartile's 14 — Ahrefs, May 2025.
  3. 84% of AI citations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are earned media; journalism alone is 27%; paid and advertorial content is 0.3% (25M+ links, 17 industries) — Muck Rack, May 2026.
  4. Across three editions of the same study (Jul 2025 → May 2026) earned media stayed between 82% and 89% of citations — Muck Rack, May 2026.
  5. The top 50 brands in AI Overviews account for 28.9% of all citations — Ahrefs, Nov 2025.

AI referral traffic and conversion

AI sends far less traffic than Google, but the visitors who do click arrive pre-qualified and convert several times better — the consistent pattern across B2B case studies, Semrush's model and Adobe's retail data.

  1. ChatGPT referrals converted at 15.9% vs 1.76% for Google organic and 10.5% for Perplexity on a B2B site; ChatGPT was 61% of its AI-driven visits — Seer Interactive, Jun 2025.
  2. The average AI search visitor is worth 4.4× an organic visitor on conversion rate; AI search visitors may overtake traditional search visitors for SEO/marketing topics by early 2028Semrush, Jul 2025.
  3. Traffic from AI assistants produced 12% of Ahrefs' signups while being 0.5% of its traffic — Ahrefs, Nov 2025.
  4. AI-referred traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 138% year over year in May 2026 and 1,324% since October 2024 — Adobe Analytics via Digital Commerce 360, Jun 2026.
  5. AI-referred retail visitors converted 54% better than non-AI traffic in May 2026, spent 53% more time on site and browsed 23% more pages — a reversal from a year earlier, when AI traffic converted worse — Adobe Analytics via Digital Commerce 360, Jun 2026.
  6. 50% of links in ChatGPT-4o responses point to business or service websites — Semrush, Jul 2025.
  7. ChatGPT has driven almost all AI referral growth, up 85% since January 2025 — Ahrefs, Nov 2025.

Crawlers and access

A large share of the web blocks the bots that fetch pages for AI answers — often by accident — and the crawl-to-referral exchange is lopsided for every AI company except Google.

  1. 73% of websites have technical barriers blocking AI crawler access — Otterly, Feb 2026.
  2. 79% of the top 100 UK/US news sites block at least one AI training bot and 71% block at least one AI retrieval bot; GPTBot is blocked by 62%, ClaudeBot by 69% — BuzzStream, Apr 2026.
  3. By end of 2023, 48% of top news sites across ten countries blocked OpenAI's crawler and 24% blocked Google's AI crawler (79% of U.S. outlets blocked OpenAI) — Reuters Institute, Feb 2024.
  4. Anthropic's crawlers made ~71,000 page requests per referral sent back in June 2025; Mistral sent 10× more referrals than crawls — Cloudflare, Jul 2025.
  5. User-triggered AI crawling grew more than 15× during 2025, while training crawls still ran at up to 8× the volume of search crawling — Cloudflare via MediaNama, Dec 2025.
  6. Pages with a First Contentful Paint under 0.4 seconds were more likely to be cited by ChatGPT's research agents — Superlines, Apr 2026.

Buyer behaviour

Buyers already research in AI before they reach a website, and B2B evaluation has moved with them.

  1. 42% of CRM software buyers use AI search as part of their evaluation — HubSpot, Jan 2026.
  2. HubSpot reports leads from AI search convert better than other sources and that its own AEO programme produced an 1,850% increase in qualified leads (vendor-reported) — HubSpot, 2026.
  3. 68% of LLM users rely on them to research and summarise information; 42% ask for shopping recommendations — Bain & Company, Feb 2025.
  4. 58% of U.S. adults ran at least one Google search that produced an AI summary in March 2025 — Pew Research Center, Jul 2025.
  5. 87% of marketers use AI to help create content; AI content costs 4.7× less than human-written — Ahrefs, Nov 2025.

What AI visibility tools cost

Sightivo compiled these from vendors' published pricing pages in August 2026; they change often, so treat them as a snapshot. Details and sources are in our GEO tools comparison.

  1. Entry prices for AI visibility tracking range from $29/mo (Otterly Lite, 15 prompts) to $99/mo (Profound Starter, ChatGPT only) to $250–300/mo (Scrunch Starter) — Sightivo compiled, Aug 2026.
  2. Suite add-ons: Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit $99/mo per domain on top of a Semrush plan; Ahrefs Brand Radar $199/mo per AI platform or $699/mo for all — Sightivo compiled, Aug 2026.
  3. HubSpot sells AEO as a $50/mo standalone tool — HubSpot, 2026.
  4. Mid-tier plans that cover multiple engines and 100+ prompts cluster at $189–$420/mo (Otterly Standard, Peec Pro, Peec Advanced, Profound Growth) — Sightivo compiled, Aug 2026.

How to cite these statistics

Copy the number with its bracketed source and link, e.g. "Branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664 vs 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, May 2025)." If you cite this roundup itself, link to this page and name the original source too — the originals deserve the credit and the link.

Methodology

  • Every figure was opened at the linked URL and checked against the page in August 2026. Where a number is widely repeated but the primary page could not be reached or does not contain it, it is listed below instead of above.
  • Vendor-reported case results (HubSpot's 3× and 1,850%) are labelled as such.
  • Dates are the publication or last-update date shown on the source.
  • None of the numbers come from Sightivo's customer data. The pricing section is compiled from vendor pricing pages.
  • This page is refreshed monthly; the updated date in the header reflects the last check.

Numbers we could not verify

  • "ChatGPT names a brand in 0.59% of 34,000 responses" (attributed to Superlines) — not found on Superlines' site.
  • "Search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026 due to AI chatbots" (Gartner, Feb 2024) — the press release could not be fetched; the prediction exists but we did not confirm its wording.
  • "Perplexity processes 1–1.5 billion queries a month in 2026" — estimates only; the last company-confirmed figure is 780M (May 2025).

Common Questions

What percentage of searches show an AI Overview?

Roughly one in five: Pew measured 18% of Google searches producing an AI summary in March 2025; Semrush measured 13.14% of tracked keywords triggering one the same month; Otterly saw AI Overviews on 33% of the queries in its 2026 citation dataset. The rate is far higher for question-form and long queries (Pew: 60% of question searches).

How many people use ChatGPT for search?

ChatGPT has 900 million weekly active users (Feb 2026), and roughly 35% of queries trigger a live web search (Superlines). Google's AI answers reach more people: 2.5 billion monthly for AI Overviews and 1 billion for AI Mode (I/O 2026).

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

Yes, in every independent dataset. Ahrefs measured a 58% drop in clicks to the #1 result when an AI Overview appears; Pew found users click a result on 8% of searches with a summary vs 15% without; Similarweb puts overall zero-click at 68–69% of Google searches.

What sources does ChatGPT cite most?

Reddit (847,338 citations in Ahrefs' dataset), then Wikipedia and Amazon. By content type, "best of" list posts take about 44% of citations for product-style queries and half of the most-cited URLs are listicles. Across all three major assistants, 84% of citations are earned media.

Does AI search traffic convert better?

Consistently: 15.9% vs 1.76% on Seer's B2B case, 4.4× the value per visitor in Semrush's model, and 54% better conversion for AI-referred retail traffic in Adobe's May 2026 data. The volume is small — Google still sends 345× more traffic — but the intent is high.

Key Takeaways

  • AI answers now sit in front of billions of searches, and clicks fall by half or more when they appear.
  • Being cited depends less on rankings than on being mentioned in the sources AI reads: mentions correlate three times more strongly than backlinks, and 84% of citations are earned media.
  • Cited pages open with a direct answer, use lists, and are recently updated; ranking in Google's top 10 helps with AI Overviews (38–92% overlap depending on the measure) and much less with ChatGPT.
  • The traffic AI sends is small but converts several times better than organic.
  • A large share of sites block the very crawlers that would cite them.
