AI Search Engines in 2026: Full List and How Each Picks Sources

Every AI search engine that matters in 2026 — ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude — with usage data and the index each runs on.

Jess O'Malley, author at Sightivo

An AI search engine answers a query with generated text that cites web pages, instead of (or on top of) a ranked list of links. Most run on an existing search index — Google's, Bing's, or their own — and a language model that reads the retrieved pages and writes the answer.

Key numbers (as of August 2026)

  • ChatGPT reached 800 million weekly users in October 2025 and 900 million by February 2026 (TechCrunch, October 2025; TechCrunch, February 2026). ChatGPT search launched on 31 October 2024 and became free for everyone on 5 February 2025 (Search Engine Land).
  • Google's AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026, a year after launch; AI Overviews had passed 2 billion monthly users by mid-2025 (Google, May 2026).
  • Perplexity handled 780 million queries in May 2025, growing more than 20% month over month, per its CEO (TechCrunch, June 2025).
  • Google still received roughly 373× as many searches as ChatGPT in 2024, and AI tools together accounted for about 3.2% of US desktop searches across 41 major sites in Q4 2025 (SparkToro / Datos; SparkToro, 2026).
  • Among AI referrals to business websites, ChatGPT's share fell from 89.1% to 62.6% between mid-2025 and spring 2026 while Claude rose from 1.4% to 18.5%, Gemini to 10.6% and Perplexity to 7.3% (Goodie, May 2026).
  • Reddit is the most-cited domain in ChatGPT answers at 16.7% of citations, nearly double Wikipedia's 8.9% (Ahrefs, July 2026).
  • Anthropic added web search to Claude on 20 March 2025, initially for paid US users (TechCrunch).

The list

Owner, launch of the search feature (not the chatbot), what index it retrieves from, and whether it cites sources by default. "Own index" means the company crawls and indexes the web itself.

Two caveats. Launch dates refer to when each product started answering from live web results; several chatbots existed earlier without search. And "retrieves from" describes the public documentation and independent analyses as of August 2026 — OpenAI, for instance, says ChatGPT search "may share disassociated search queries with the Bing search engine" and combines that with its own technology, and that arrangement can change.

Which AI search engines people actually use

Usage numbers are the messiest part of this topic, because companies report different units (weekly users, monthly users, queries, visits). The defensible figures:

  • ChatGPT is the largest by a wide margin: 900 million weekly users (February 2026). Not every session is a search, but OpenAI's help documentation says ChatGPT decides to search automatically "based on what you ask", so a large share of informational prompts now retrieve from the web.
  • Google remains the largest search engine of any kind. AI Overviews have 2 billion-plus monthly users because they sit inside ordinary Google searches; AI Mode crossed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026 with queries doubling each quarter.
  • Perplexity is the largest search-first challenger: 780 million queries in May 2025 and growing 20%+ month over month at the time; public figures for 2026 are estimates rather than audited disclosures.
  • Claude is the fastest-growing referrer: in Goodie's GA4 panel of business websites, Claude went from 1.4% to 18.5% of AI referrals in eight months, with 14 of 16 tracked brands showing the same trend.

Put against classic search, all of it is still small. SparkToro and Datos measured Google at roughly 373 times ChatGPT's search volume in 2024, and AI tools combined at 3.2% of US desktop searches across 41 major sites in Q4 2025. The reason to care is not share of searches; it is that AI answers name a handful of brands per question, and those recommendations convert unusually well.

How each one picks sources

There are three architectures, and which one an engine uses decides what you have to do to appear in it.

1. Own-index engines (Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini; Perplexity; Brave; Kagi). The engine ranks pages from its own index, then the model writes from the top results. For Google, the company's guide states the features "are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems" (Google Search Central). Ranking well for the question — and for the sub-questions AI Mode generates — is the entry ticket.

2. Bing-backed engines (ChatGPT search, Microsoft Copilot, DuckDuckGo's AI answers, and Meta AI in part). Retrieval runs on Bing's index, so a page that Bing has not indexed cannot be cited, regardless of how it ranks on Google. Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow matter here in a way they never did for Google-only SEO. OpenAI layers its own crawler on top: OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot collects training data, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks (OpenAI crawler documentation).

3. Search-API engines (Claude, Grok, DeepSeek). The chatbot calls an external search API and reads what comes back. Independent analysis of Claude's citations found an 86.7% overlap with Brave Search's top organic results, which is why Claude's sources often differ from ChatGPT's for the same question.

Across all three, the brand an engine names is a separate matter from the page it retrieves. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlate with visibility at 0.664 (ChatGPT), 0.709 (AI Mode) and 0.656 (AI Overviews), while backlinks showed "very weak correlations" (Ahrefs, December 2025). The pages that get retrieved are, disproportionately, listicles, comparison posts, Reddit threads and review sites — which is why Reddit alone takes 16.7% of ChatGPT's citations.

What this means for a brand

  • Cover the three indexes. Be indexed in Google and Bing (Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow), and don't block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot in robots.txt unless you mean to.
  • Answer the sub-questions. AI Mode's fan-out and Perplexity's multi-step search both retrieve for narrower queries than the one the user typed: pricing, comparisons, "for [audience]", "is it worth it".
  • Be on the pages that get cited. For most categories those are "best X" lists, Reddit threads, review sites and YouTube. Being listed there does more for AI mentions than another backlink does.
  • Track engine by engine. Sources differ per engine, so a fix that gets you into ChatGPT may do nothing for Claude. Measure each one against the same prompt set.

Which engines to track first

You cannot optimise for fourteen engines at once, and you do not need to. A practical order for a startup:

  1. ChatGPT — the largest audience by an order of magnitude, and the engine most buyers mean when they say "I asked AI". Requires Bing indexing and OAI-SearchBot access.
  2. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — sit inside the search you already work on. If you rank, you are in the pool; the extra work is answer-first structure and sub-question coverage.
  3. Claude — smallest of the three by users but the fastest-growing referrer in business panels (1.4% → 18.5% of AI referrals in eight months), and it retrieves from a different index, so it is a useful second opinion on whether your mentions are broad enough.
  4. Perplexity — worth tracking if your buyers are technical or research-heavy; its citations are the most transparent, which makes it the easiest engine to diagnose.
  5. Copilot, Gemini, Grok, the rest — check quarterly. Copilot mirrors Bing, Gemini mirrors Google, so fixes for the first two usually carry over.

Whatever the order, use the same prompt set across engines and sample each prompt more than once: AI answers vary between runs, and a single check tells you less than it appears to.

What "AI search engine" does not mean

Two things get mislabelled. AI-powered ranking — Google has used machine learning in ranking since RankBrain in 2015 — is not an AI search engine; the output is still a list of links. And chatbots without retrieval — a model answering purely from training data — are not searching anything; they are recalling. The engines in the table above do both: retrieve, then generate. That combination is what makes them citable, and what makes being cited the new unit of visibility.

Where Sightivo fits

Sightivo runs your buyer prompts on ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Overviews, records which brands and sources each engine cited, and turns the gap into a prioritised list of pages to get mentioned on — with the authors and drafted outreach. The free AI visibility checker runs a five-prompt ChatGPT check on any domain.

Common Questions

What is the most popular AI search engine?

By users, ChatGPT: 900 million weekly users as of February 2026, with web search on by default for questions that need it. By reach inside ordinary searching, Google's AI Overviews, which appear for a share of the billions of Google searches a day and had over 2 billion monthly users by mid-2025. Perplexity is the most-used search-first AI engine, with 780 million queries in May 2025.

Is ChatGPT a search engine?

Since October 2024, it functions as one when it decides a question needs current information: it retrieves web results, reads them and answers with citations. It is not a search engine in the classic sense — it does not maintain a public ranked index you can browse — and much of what it says about brands comes from training data rather than live retrieval.

Does ChatGPT use Bing?

Yes. OpenAI's documentation says ChatGPT may share disassociated search queries with Bing to return web results, and Microsoft confirmed Bing powers ChatGPT search at launch. OpenAI also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search, and has licensing deals with publishers whose content is served directly.

Which AI search engine cites its sources?

All of the engines in the table cite sources when they search: Perplexity with numbered citations on every answer, ChatGPT search and Claude with inline links, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode with link cards and inline citations. The difference is how visible and how numerous the citations are — Perplexity and AI Mode show the most.

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for search?

Perplexity is built around search: every answer cites sources, it runs multiple retrieval steps, and it has its own index. ChatGPT is a general assistant that searches when needed and answers from memory otherwise. For research where you want to verify every claim, Perplexity's format is more transparent; for volume of people asking, ChatGPT is roughly an order of magnitude larger.

How do I get my site into AI search engines?

Be indexed by Google and Bing, allow the AI crawlers in robots.txt, write pages that answer specific questions in the first two sentences of each section, and get your brand mentioned on the listicles, review sites and community threads those engines already cite for your category. Then check each engine separately — our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT covers the ChatGPT-specific mechanics.

Key Takeaways

  • Fourteen AI search engines matter in 2026; they run on three architectures — own index (Google, Perplexity), Bing-backed (ChatGPT, Copilot) and search-API (Claude, Grok).
  • ChatGPT is the largest (900M weekly users); Google's AI Mode has 1B monthly users; Perplexity is the largest search-first challenger; Claude is the fastest-growing referrer.
  • Classic search still dwarfs all of it (~373× in 2024; AI ≈ 3.2% of desktop searches), but AI answers name only a few brands per question.
  • Which index an engine uses decides what you must do: Bing indexing for ChatGPT, Google ranking for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Brand mentions on cited sources — Reddit is 16.7% of ChatGPT's citations — predict visibility better than backlinks.
